SAFETY4SEA's annual survey, the so called ’'Shipping CSR500 Survey’’ highlights once again the many benefits that CSR practices offer to the industry's organizations which realize their responsibility as part of the society and their contribution to the environmental sustainability in order to move forward.

Although it is a new risk, cyber-crime is considered one of the top five risks in shipping.  This is where we stand at the moment; we know only four paths to implementation in shipping. But do we know how successful are they or even which is the most effective?

The SAFETY4SEA Cyber Masterclass successfully concluded on 16th of May at the Bookcastle of the National Library at Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) attracting 240 delegates from a total of 125 organizations.

Mr. Mark Hadfield, CEO, Flow Water Technologies, addressed the subject of ballast water treatment which is one of those subjects that whenever it is brought up, ship operators tend to avoid, he commented. This is due to the enormous space required for the installation of a BWMS and the many regulations concerning its application.

Mr. Kyriacos Gregoriou, Marine Surveyor, DMS Cyprus, highlighted hot debated issues concerning the 2020 Global 0.5% sulphur cap challenge. He began his presentation with an overview of the SOx regulations examining later what the global limit actually means for ships and how these can meet low Sulphur emissions standards.

In her presentation at SAFETY4SEA Cyprus Conference, Mrs. Christiana Moustaki, Senior Crew Manager, Fleet Management, insisted on putting people first, at the dawn of the smart shipping revolution. She said that today, the global supply of officers is forecasted to increase steadily, but this is predicted to be outplaced by increasing demand.

During his presentation at the SAFETY4SEA Cyprus conference, Sotiris Kambanellas, President, YoungShip Cyprus presented key issues with regards to crewing in the 21st century, considering how new technologies are impacting the global shipping industry.  In a constantly evolving world, even a more “traditional” industry like shipping is already changing.

The inaugural SAFETY4SEA Conference in Cyprus successfully concluded on Tuesday 17th of April, at Columbia Plaza in Limassol, attracting 220 delegates from a total of 115 organizations. The pro bono event brought together global experts who focused on the recent and future challenges toward safe, smart and green shipping excellence and sustainable shipping.

When we ask the overall question: How is your safety culture? 80% will give the above mentioned answer. So ‘above average’ is justified from these two parameters, but they hardly explain the truth about what is going on onboard the vessels. Safety performance is often evaluated from the outside, audits, inspections, etc., which is OK, but cannot stand alone.

Faced with a decision with huge cost implications, shipowners are considering all options on how to tackle sulphur emissions. Although any possible delay was ruled out during IMO MEPC 71, industry stakeholders think that a postponement of the 2020 deadline is possible, likewise the time extension of the BWM Convention.
