The Port of Helsinki announced the construction of a new Royal Park carpark to the West Harbour, expected to operate from early 2021. The carpark will take shape near West Terminal 2 but will also serve the passengers of West Terminal 1. 

At the start of 2019, the Port of Helsinki introduced a pricing model in order to steer truck traffic to the harbours outside the city centre during rush hours. With the model in use, the truck traffic in Vuosaari has increased by 33% and the traffic in the central harbour areas has decreased by 4%.

The Port of Helsinki issued its price list for 2020 updating the sizes and types of its environmental discounts, as part of its efforts to pioneer in sustainable development, achieving significant emissions reductions and become carbon-neutral by 2035.

In our special column, we are excited to host an interview with Andreas Slotte, Head of Sustainable Development at Port of Helsinki, who talks about his dream on working in the maritime industry, an advice coming from his father. Mr Slotte highlights that people should never stop being curious, advising that they should keep on learning through the years.

Port of Helsinki ordered an additional automated mooring system, in line with the port's efforts to optimize safety and efficiency and also reduce environmental impact, following similar orders from the Port of Turku and Port of Tallinn in recent months.

Nauticor-operated LNG bunker supply vessel Kairos conducted its first SIMOPS (simultaneous operations) LNG bunkering operation with the world's first container ship retrofitted with an LNG engine, Wes Amelie, at the Vuosaari Harbour container terminal in the Port of Helsinki, Finland. 

Sharing figures for the first half of 2019, Finland's Port of Helsinki informed that its passenger numbers have bounced back to last year’s level, but the amount of cargo transported via the Port during the first half of the year did not reach last year’s level.

Elenger, an Eesti Gaas subsidiary, began LNG bunkering operations in the port of Helsinki. The ship bunkered was the same that Eesti Gaas bunkered in the port of Tallinn, namely the shuttle Megastar which operates between Helsinki and Tallinn. Megastar will be truck-to-ship bunkered in the port of Helsinki one time per week, while the LNG will be mainly delivered from the new Novatek's LNG plant in Vysotsk.

Warstila in cooperation with the City of Helsinki’s Maritime Strategy Project aims to present a smart, energy efficient, waterborne and carbon-neutral passenger transportation system. A system that Ulla Tapaninen, Head of Unit, Enterprise Services at City of Helsinki, hopes will better connect the mainland with the islands, allowing for residents and tourists alike to better utilize and enjoy the true beauty that the region has to offer.

The Port of Helsinki inaugurated the construction of a new upper ramp for the Katajanokka terminal, that will speed up vehicle boarding, resulting to a less time for passengers travelling by car. The new ramp will be used by Viking Line’s XPRS fast ferry.
