According to BIMCO’s Dry Bulk Terminals Vetting Report 2018, the best performing port is Szczecin in Poland. The report gathered data from 144 ships covering 381 terminals. 97% of the reports were rated as average or better, giving an average rating of 3.6 out of five.

Polskie LNG launched a tender procedure to choose the contractor of the fourth project under the LNG Terminal Expansion Program, namely the construction of an additional jetty. The construction of the new jetty is expected to be completed in 2023.

Headquartered in the Netherlands, multimodal operator, Samskip, announced that it will lead the challenging initiative to develop autonomous, zero-emissions containerships that, at the same time, operate at a profit.

Poland wants to build a canal through a narrow strip of land that blocks the Vistula Lagoon on the north-east coast from the Baltic Sea. The president of Poland's ruling party noted the canal will be built through a split of land near the Russian border.  Currently, Polish ships leaving from the port of Elblag have to pass through Russian waters to get to the open sea.

The Port of Gdynia signed an agreement with PGNiG and Gas-Trading SA on Tuesday, June 19, regarding on the use of LNG fuel. According to the agreement, a barge adapted for bunkering with LNG from other vessels will be constructed. The project is part of the National Center for Research and Development program - INNOSHIP.

How to create 'better shipping for a better future' was the key theme running throughout the 2018 IMO World Maritime Day Parallel Event, held in Szczecin, Poland, on 13-15 June. Ministers from 13 countries took part in a roundtable discussion with IMO Secretary-General, focusing on green and smart shipping and capacity-building.

A 40-year-old Filipino crewmember died probably from malaria onboard a bulker. The seaman was sent to a hospital in a serious condition, but despite resuscitation, he lost his life. According to information, another crewmember is at the hospital as well with similar symptoms. The bulker came to Poland from Liberia.

The European Commission approved aid rules for Polish support to SMEs in the shipbuilding sector. This measure aims to encourage new investment and benefit regional development. The Commission has also opened an investigation into a Polish tax scheme for shipyards.

Poland plans to construct a deep-sea port in Gdnask Bay, which will have the capability of receiving almost 100 MMT of cargo per year. A tender regarding the the project will be announced at the end of this year or the start of 2018. 

The Port of Gdansk Authority announced that the 1st half of 2017 was a record in terms of transshipments, achieving a value several percent higher than in the same period of 2016. The increase was noted in fuels and general cargo, particularly containers and ro-ro type cargo.
