The Port of Gdynia signed an agreement with PGNiG and Gas-Trading SA on Tuesday, June 19, regarding on the use of LNG fuel. According to the agreement, a barge adapted for bunkering with LNG gas from other vessels will be constructed.
The project is part of the National Center for Research and Development program – INNOSHIP. According to this program, a sufficient number of LNG bunkering points should be created at sea ports, by 2025, enabling inland waterway vessels or LNG marine vessels to navigate the entire TEN-T core network. In Poland, these are to be Gdynia, Gdańsk, Szczecin and Świnoujście.

According to the agreement, the companies will cooperate on technological instructions for bunkering ships and the mobile point of bunkering with LNG fuel in the Port of Gdynia and on facilitating shipowners to bunker from the sea using ship-to-ship technology.
Currently, the European Commission wants to completely eliminate emissions from maritime transport by 2050. For Central and Eastern Europe, this means even more restrictive emissions standards, the Port said.
Continuing, it noted that from January 2021, nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions will be reduced by 75% in NECA (Nitric Emission Control Area) areas – including in the Baltic Sea. These are important changes that make the Port of Gdynia a leader in Poland when it comes to LNG bunkering.
