The Mission to Seafarers in support of the Shipowners Club launches its Q3 2019 "Seafarers Happiness Index" highlighting that there has been an improvement of seafarers' wellness onboard vessels, presenting an increasing to 6.59/10 from the previous 6.27, marking a promising and better future in respect of the seafarers and their life onboard.

The International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia attempted to partner in order to support and boost seafarers in all of the Saudi Arabia ports. This close relationship has already provided both parties with fruitful results with the successful repatriation of 5 seafarers with their entitled wages from the vessel MKN 205 in Damman port has already been produced.

Seafarers working onboard cruise ships and ferries are the unhappiest in the shipping industry, the latest Seafarers Happiness Index report reveals for the second quarter of 2019. Overall, seafarer happiness has slipped this quarter, down to 6.27/10 from 6.31. 

The Mission to Seafarers calls those working at sea to complete the anonymous Seafarer Happiness Index survey, in order to have their say about life on board. The survey will help the industry better understand what needs to be changed. The survey will share the results with the industry, so they know what they are doing well and what needs to be improved.

British seafarer welfare charity Mission to Seafarers announced the launch of its new WeCare Social Communications and Financial Literacy training programme, a training initiative aiming to address rising levels of stress among seafarers brought on by financial pressures and the misuse of social networking platforms.

UK-based seafarer welfare charity The Mission to Seafarers announced cooperation with superyacht brokerage house Burgess, to establish a welfare support network for superyacht crew, representing an industry first in the maritime industry.

The Mission to Seafarers announced a strategic partnership agreement with the Shipowners P&I Club, which became the 2019 Gold Sponsor for the Mission’s ongoing Seafarers Happiness Index. In its Seafarers Happiness Index figures for the first quarter of 2019, the Mission revealed high levels of pride among crews, but also ongoing issues.

The Mission to Seafarers, International seafarer welfare charity, addressed that reports of obesity, mental health problems and gender discrimination are rapidly increasing, while wellness at sea keeps on falling. Ben Bailey, Director of Advocacy and Regional Engagement, will present the latest findings from Seafarers Happiness Index at CMA Shipping Conference in April.

The Mission to Seafarers revealed a new centre for seafarers in Port Talbot, to increase its welfare service provision for seafarers calling at the port. The new centre received a £35,000 grant from the Merchant Navy Welfare Board, and aims to offer respite care to seafarers who visit the port each year. The centre will be providing a place to relax, socialise, and connect with friends and family. 

Connectivity remains the number one demand for seafarers. However, they also expect better levels of service and lower costs. It was also observed that seafarers are keen to make crew internet access compulsory on all ships. However, respondents felt that insufficient investment is being made to ensure ongoing, high speed, and quality connections.
