During the last GREEN4SEA Conference, Mr. Christopher Fee, General Manager – Environment and Sustainability, Oldendorff Carriers presented experience feedback from the use of scrubbers so far. Specifically, Mr. Fee attempted to debunk the myth that these systems harm the environment.

Cargo ship or a large cruise liner are very different places to work on, but looking at these 2 places from a perspective of a crew member health and safety actually we can see some common features. The risks for the wellbeing and health, the reasons of signing off board the ship and the need to get good quality treatment in a home country, in many cases, is very similar.

In 2017, there were an estimated 219 million cases of malaria in 90 countries” and deaths caused by malaria reached 435,000, according to data provided by WHO. Meanwhile, UK P&I Club said it has recently been informed of two deaths and two cases of serious illness due to malaria. 

The American P&I Club informs of a change in the Pre-employment Medical Examination (PEME) Program. The change regards the psychology tests, which the American Club will no longer require to ensure compliance with PEME. The Club also requested all clinics to update their PEME price list given this change. A new price list will be posted in due course.

Sailor's Society  alerts on seafarers' mental health, as a suicide incident image emerged. As Sandra Welch, deputy CEO of Sailors’ Society stated the image is a wake up call to the maritime industry. Thus, the incident is only one case, amongst the rest that go unreported every year.

Marlins will cooperate with UK P&I Club to support seafarers’ health and well-being. Namely, Marlins, V.Group’s brand of Maritime English language testing, recruitment and e-learning solutions for seafarers, and the UK P&I Club will provide various e-learning courses, in order to improve seafarers' physical and mental health.

The healthy amount of sleep for the average adult is around seven to eight hours each night. A lack of sleep causes many significant changes in the body and increases the risk for serious health concerns. Fatigue is seen as a significant contributory factor to many incidents.

Connectivity remains the number one demand for seafarers. However, they also expect better levels of service and lower costs. It was also observed that seafarers are keen to make crew internet access compulsory on all ships. However, respondents felt that insufficient investment is being made to ensure ongoing, high speed, and quality connections.

Sea-Watch, after being stranded at sea for up to 17 days reported, through Twitter, episodes of people refusing to eat. Yet, on December 8, Sea-Watch gave an update, stating that people started eating again. According to the rescue vessel approximately 49 migrants stranded off the coast of Malta, started eating again after refusing since no European ports offer them a safe port.   

ISWAN, partnered with MHG Insurance Brokers to launch a new research on seafarers who work on superyachts to investigate welfare issues specific to the sector, backed up by in-depth interviews and diary studies. The research's results were announced on December 7, at a seminar held at Inmarsat’s headquarters in London.
