The International Maritime Prize for 2018 has been presented to Mr. Joseph J. Angelo, a former USCG and INTERTANKO senior executive who participated in IMO meetings for many years, providing leadership on a number of key regulatory developments.

Intertanko launched a guide providing shipowners with information concerning proper cleaning of bunker tanks which had in the past stored high sulphur fuel oil, in preparation of the upcoming 2020 sulphur cap, keeping in mind that ships will sail using low sulphur fuel oil. 

Shipping associations have called on ship owners to inform Britain’s navy of their movements before sailing into the Strait of Hormuz because of the escalating crisis in the region. BIMCO, ICS, INTERTANKO and OCIMF published guidance for vessels that sail through the Arabian Gulf (AG), Straits of Hormuz (SoH) and Gulf of Oman (GOO).

Following the attacks against two tankers in the Gulf of Oman, the US Secretary of State, Michael R. Pompeo, provided interviews commenting that the US is considering a military response after the attack, with the goal of protecting the area and the vessels operating there. 

The US released new images on June 17, claiming once again that sectarian Iranian forces attacked at least one petrochemical tanker in the Gulf of Oman. The photos were taken from a Navy MH-60R Seahawk, and they depict a similar scene as a grainy black and white video US Central Command that was released last week. According to the US, the pictures show an Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy fast attack craft coming alongside the Japanese-owned petrochemical tanker M/V Kokuka Courageou sand removed what CENTCOM claims to be a limpet mine. In addition, images shot from alongside Kokuka Courageous taken from the crew of USS Bainbridge, present a greenish-grey base attached to the hull, what CENTCOM says is the remains of the removed mine. Iran is responsible for the attack based on video evidence and the resources and proficiency needed to quickly remove the unexploded limpet mine CENTCOM stated. Credit: CENTCOM What is more, complementing the imagery, CENTCOM also released a detailed timeline of the attacks and the US response, however Iran continues to deny that they were responsible for the attack. Following the two suspected attacks against tankers transiting the Gulf of Oman Thursday, INTERTANKO and OCIMF noted that these attacks appears to have been well-planned and coordinated and recommended operators to review associated BMP5 guidance.

Following the tanker attacks on Thursday, 13 June in the Gulf of Oman, the IMO Secretary General, the International Chamber of Shipping and INTERTANKO expressed their concerns, noting that this is an intolerable situation threatening the lives of seafarers, the environment and the world economy.

The Norwegian Maritime Authority informs that in light of the sabotage act against four vessels off Fujairah port, the Maritime Security (MARSEC) adjusted the security levels in the area to ISPS1 and advise shipowners to carefully consider measures from ISPS2.

In a joint statement OCIMF and Intertanko commented that the sabotage act against four vessels in UAE territorial waters seems to be well-planned and coordinated. They both noted that it appears that each vessel was attacked by a sub-surface explosive device placed by either a remotely-operated vessel or diver. Both types of delivery method are more likely to happen when vessels are near stationary or in a very restricted waterway.

BIMCO and Intertanko have jointly published Q&As addressing the contractual implications owners and charterers consider when chartering ships fitted with scrubbers. The Q&As highlight the key charter party clauses and concepts which should be analyzed for both time and voyage charter parties.
