In the meeting conducted by IMO's Sub-Committee focusing on  Ship Systems and Equipment (SSE 6) it was further discussed the development of functional requirements for SOLAS Chapter III on life-saving appliances and arrangements. 

IBIA has been participating, consulting and contributing to IMO's meetings, concerning amendments to MARPOL Annex VI that will ensure consistent implementation of the global 0.50% sulphur cap, developed at the 6th meeting of the IMO’s Sub-Committee on Pollution Prevention and Response (PPR 6).

As the world is preparing for IMO's 2020 sulphur cap fuel regulation, oil major ExxonMobil’s marine fuels outfit is innovating to be at the forefront of the emerging low sulphur market, as Forbes reports. The oil major sees the sulphur regulations as an opportunity and not as an operational problem. 

BP Marine announced that it will begin to retail low sulphur fuel that complies with upcoming MARPOL regulations which are limiting the sulphur content of marine fuels. Namely, BP will be introducing the new very low sulphur fuel oil, with a maximum 0.5% sulphur content, after conducting successful sea trials in the Amsterdam/Rotterdam/Antwerp and Singapore hubs.

Jamaica's Minister of Transport and Mining, Hon Robert Montague, discussed about the importance of the Blue Economy to Jamaica and the measures taken to support the Jamaican maritime sector. For Jamaica the ocean is an invaluable resource that has a lot of potentials for economic development and job creation.

According to EIA, petroleum refineries in the US Gulf Coast rely more and more on merchant suppliers, instead of their own production, to provide the hydrogen used to reduce the sulphur content of fuel. Namely, with the demand for distillate fuel oil increasing, and sulphur content regulations becoming stricter, refineries need to use more hydrogen.

Ms.Sanjam Sahi Gupta, Director for Sitara Shipping Ltd, has launched a new initiative in light of the IMO’s 2019 World Maritime Day theme. The surveys aim to understand at what level women are employed in shipping, what roles have been assigned to them and what women-friendly policies have been put in place.

In light of the upcoming federal election in Australia, Gas Energy Australia, the country’s downstream gaseous fuels peak industry body, gave a submission to the Department of Infrastructure, Regional Development and Cities regarding LNG marine bunkering in Australia. The submission aims to inform DoIRC on alternative fuels for Australia’s contribution to the next IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee.
