Just under 500 seafarers remain sheltered awaiting evacuation onboard 109 ships at Ukrainian ports in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, down from 2,000 six weeks ago.  

The annual World Day for Safety and Health at Work on 28 April promotes the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases globally. The World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2022 focuses on enhancing social dialogue towards a culture of safety and health.

The shipping pathogeny of crew abandonment does not seem to end with ILO’s dedicated database recording a total of 95 cases last year, continuing a growing trend of 85 reported in 2020 and 40 in 2019.

Oman became the 100th ILO Member State to ratify the Maritime Labor Convention (MLC). The Ambassador of Oman, Idris Abdul Rahman Al Khanjari, formally submitted the ratification documents on 29 March.

The heads of the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) have called for urgent action to protect seafarers and vessels stranded in Ukrainian ports and nearby waters following the Russian aggression against the country.

The Maritime Just Transition Task Force, founded by the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), the International Transport Workers’ Federation and the UN Global Compact, announced that the Singapore Maritime Foundation has become its first public program partner.

The Director-General of the International Labour Organization, Guy Ryder, condemned “the unprovoked and unjustifiable attack by the Russian Federation against Ukraine conducted without regard to international law, and the continuing loss of life, and immense human suffering that it is inflicting on the people of Ukraine.”

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has called on governments around the world to ensure access to medical care for seafarers, after it emerged that crews continue to be refused urgent treatment at ports during the pandemic.

ILO, IMO, UNCTAD, WHO, have issued a joint statement urging stakeholders to collaborate to prevent undue hardship to seafarers during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

ILO published a statement on COVID- 19 and maritime labour issues, noting that seafarers must be given access to medical care and not denied shore leave.
