The Panama Canal Authority is carrying out a public consultation regarding a proposal to adjust the Panama Canal tolls for container ships, vehicle carriers, dry bulk carriers, tankers, chemical carriers, LPG and LNG vessels, passenger vessels and small vessels. The new toll charges are expected to apply from January 1, 2020.

Shipping associations have called on ship owners to inform Britain’s navy of their movements before sailing into the Strait of Hormuz because of the escalating crisis in the region. BIMCO, ICS, INTERTANKO and OCIMF published guidance for vessels that sail through the Arabian Gulf (AG), Straits of Hormuz (SoH) and Gulf of Oman (GOO).

After the UK-flagged ship Stena Impero, diverted from its original course in the Strait of Hormuz, the International Chamber of Shipping's (ICS) Secretary General, Guy Platten, stated that he is extremely concerned about this latest development, particularly in respect of the safety of seafarers.

As there are only six months until the implementation of the 'Global Sulphur Cap', ICS has published an updated guidance to assist shipowners comply with new IMO regulations. The updated guidelines will also help ships avoid port state control difficulties that might come up, through no fault of the operator, and allow shipowners and ships' crews to address the practical challenges due to this multi-fuel scenario.

Representatives from the shipping industry met the previous week to discuss on priorities of the global shipowners’ association, the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS). Although the meeting was overshadowed by the attacks against two oil tankers in Gulf of Oman, the participants discussed of IMO 2020 regulations and CO2 reduction.

The US released new images on June 17, claiming once again that sectarian Iranian forces attacked at least one petrochemical tanker in the Gulf of Oman. The photos were taken from a Navy MH-60R Seahawk, and they depict a similar scene as a grainy black and white video US Central Command that was released last week. According to the US, the pictures show an Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy fast attack craft coming alongside the Japanese-owned petrochemical tanker M/V Kokuka Courageou sand removed what CENTCOM claims to be a limpet mine. In addition, images shot from alongside Kokuka Courageous taken from the crew of USS Bainbridge, present a greenish-grey base attached to the hull, what CENTCOM says is the remains of the removed mine. Iran is responsible for the attack based on video evidence and the resources and proficiency needed to quickly remove the unexploded limpet mine CENTCOM stated. Credit: CENTCOM What is more, complementing the imagery, CENTCOM also released a detailed timeline of the attacks and the US response, however Iran continues to deny that they were responsible for the attack. Following the tanker attacks on Thursday, 13 June in the Gulf of Oman, the IMO Secretary General, the International Chamber of Shipping and INTERTANKO expressed their concerns, noting that this is an intolerable situation threatening the lives of seafarers, the environment and the world economy.

Members of the shipping community, Flag States and Agencies from Gulf of Guinea gathered at the IMO Headquarters for a day-long symposium on Maritime Security in the Gulf of Guinea. The shipping industry, as well as seafarer groups, organized the event aiming to give emphasis to the continuing danger to seafarers that are sailing in the Gulf of Guinea.

ICS has launched its Annual Review 2019, in which it provides an in-depth insight into the most pressing issues that shipping is facing nowadays. As the review says, shipowners are mostly concerned regarding the successful implementation of the 2020 global sulphur cap, which will apply from 1 January 2020. However, the report analyzes other pressing issues as well, such as keeping an updated STCW training regime, the UN Law of the Sea Implementing Agreement, piracy and possible economic risks.

ICS published its Annual Review setting out a broad cross section of just some of the many issues in which it is engaging on behalf of the global shipping industry. ICS said that its immediate focus, and of the shipowners it represents, is the successful implementation of the UN International Maritime Organization (IMO) global sulphur cap.
