According to a new research, global warming has heated the oceans by as much as one atomic bomb explosion per second for the past 150 years, Guardian reports. Namely, over 90% of the heat trapped by GHG emissions has been absorbed by the ocean.

Although it was not as warm as October, November 2018 ranked as the fifth hottest November on record, with the year to date coming in as fourth hottest for planet Earth, according to scientists with NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information.

It is estimated that the oceans are warming faster in comparison to the past, setting a new record on temperature in 2018, resulting to damaging marine life. Measurements, run by an international network of 3.900 floats that are deployed in the oceans since 2000, revealed an increased warming since 1971, than what it was calculated by the UN assessment of climate change in 2013. 

For 13th year, NOAA issued its Arctic Report Card reflecting ice and ocean observations made throughout the Arctic during the 2018 calendar year. The report highlights, among others, that the year 2018 was the second warmest year on record in the Arctic since 1900 (after 2016), at +1.7° C relative to the long-term average (1981-2010).

In order for the world trade system to cope with the projected impacts of climate change, it has to transform. Climate change’s impacts and the pressing need to prepare ports and coastal transport infrastructure, are now on the spotlight, UNCTAD’s chief of policy and legislation, Regina Asariotis said.

Navigation along the Northern Sea Route could eventually be possible year-round until 2030, as the climate continues warming, the Head of the Russian State Hydrometeorology University Valery Mikheyev told. He explained that according to forecast, by 2030 NSR's and its shores will not have ice.

MOL announced that it will support three initiatives to address the issue of global warming. These are the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures; Japan Climate Initiative; and Cool Choice. These aim to contribute to global environmental conservation by developing environmental and emission-free businesses.

The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) issued figures confirming that while sea ice extent in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas remains below average, extent remains especially low on the Atlantic side of the Arctic in the Barents and Laptev Seas. October sea ice extent in the Arctic was the third lowest in the satellite record, averaging 6.06 million square kilometers (2.34 million square miles).

The United Nations Environment Programme will publish a report during November, presenting an assessment of current national emissions mitigation efforts and ambitions that countries have presented. The report will also look at fiscal policy, the role of innovation, and the role of non-state and subnational action.

WWF published the report 'Living Planet' in which it reports that wildlife populations have decreased by 60%, in a span of 40 years. It states that this generation is the first that knows people are destroying the environment and the last one that can do something to reverse it.
