Hungary has detained the captain of a cruise ship based in Switzerland following a collision with a small motorboat on the Danube River on 18th May, which resulted in two deaths and left five people missing, Reuters highlights.
In particular, the incident was reported on Saturday when a 35-year-old man with a bleeding head wound was discovered near a major road by the river close to Veroce, 55 km (34 miles) north of Budapest.
Hungarian police reported that the cruise ship captain, a Czech national, was detained on suspicion of several offenses, including failing to stop and provide assistance after the collision.
Based on the suspicion of police, the captain did not alert his crew after the accident, did not follow provisions of the rescue protocol and took no action whatsoever to save the persons afflicted.

Police have interviewed 25 witnesses, including the cruise ship’s crew, passengers, and others. The search continued on Monday for the five missing individuals, all of whom were on the motorboat, including an 18-year-old woman and a 39-year-old man.
