A South Korean court granted the arrest warrant for the ex-head of maritime affairs at Polaris Shipping, on January 24. However, the court dismissed the arrest warrants for the head of Polaris as well as an inspector from the Korean Register and two men who worked for a private survey firm. The Busan Coast Guard had requested a warrant of arrest on the 'charge of violation of shipping safety law'.

Ten crew died and another 10 are missing and presumed dead, following a fire that broke out on two ships while they were transferring fuel in the Kerch Strait, Black Sea Monday, according to data provided by Russia’s Transport Ministry.

Transport Accident Investigation Commission issued a report on the February 2017 accident in Port Chalmers, Dunedin, on board the passenger cruise ship Emerald Princess, in which a nitrogen cylinder burst, resulted to one fatality. The report highlights a lack of global minimum standards for inspection, testing and rejecting pressure cylinders for stored energy systems on lifeboat launching installations – a system common on cruise ships.

The US Coast Guard, announced on January 16, the official marine casualty investigation of the fishing vessel Mary B I, which capsized off Newport, Oregon on January 9. The capsized vessel led to three fishermen loosing their lives, according to the Coast Guard's statement. 

A South Korean district court ordered the state and ferry operator Chonghaejin Marine to compensate the survivors of the 2014 Sewol ferry disaster. It decided that each of the 20 survivors should be given $71,000 in compensation for psychological trauma.

Hong Kong authorities are still searching for two crew members that are missing after fire and explosion took place on board the tanker Aulac Fortune on January 8. As a result of the incident, one crew member was killed. Hong Kong’s Fire Department deployed teams to help divers in their attempt to find the missing seafarers.

The US Coast Guard is investigating the capsizing of the commercial fishing vessel Mary B II, which led to the deaths of three fishermen at the entrance of Yaquina Bay in Newport, Oregon, on January 8. Before the capsizing of Mary B II, its crew had requested a US Coast Guard escort across the Yaquina Bay Bar.

A salvage tug is carrying out a search and recovery mission for the five missing crewmembers of the Sincerity Ace, which caught fire northwest of Oahu on the high seas, on December 31. The tug will now perform its own search for the missing before taking the Sincerity Ace in tow and bringing the ship to a port of refuge.

Two seafarers have lost their lives, while four others are missing after a cargo ship sank in the Black Sea, according to Anadolu Agency. The exact cause of the accident, still remains unknown. A plane, three helicopters and two boats were taking part in the rescue operation, as stated by the Turkish Coast Guard.
