A consortium between ABS and Arcsilea has won a tender from the European Commission, Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport (DG MOVE) to carry out a technical study on the Future of Ship Energy Efficiency Measures.

While there has been some recent progress in the fight against shipping emissions, there are still serious challenges, relating to cost and lack of compliance with standards, noted Keith B. Letourneau, Partner Maritime, BLANKROME, at the 2022 GREEN4SEA Forum, warning that without mandatory reductions, GHG emissions from the maritime sector could increase between 50-250% by 2050.

The 75th session of the IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 75) took place remotely from 16 to 20 November 2020, and some of the amendments will enter into force on 1 April 2022.

2022 is going to be a year of focus on the environment. Following COP26, the message is clear; we need to act now against the climate change and for the maritime industry, IMO has already paved the way with the enforcement of strict environmental rules; nonetheless, maritime safety will always be a key concern for the industry.

The IMO's MEPC 76 took place virtually from 10 to 17 June 2021, adopting amendments to MARPOL Annex VI that will require ships to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, in line with the 2018 Initial IMO Strategy. The meeting also adopted an HFO ban for ships in Arctic. Both decisions were seen as inadequate by green groups and a significant part of the industry. 

The eventual goal is full decarbonisation and it will likely require a range of solutions to make this happen, notes Kim Diederichsen, CEO, Anemoi.

Wood Mackenzie’s latest report reveals that the IMO’s 2030 carbon intensity target can be achieved with the adoption of the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) and Energy Efficiency Design Index for existing ships (EEXI) amendments at MEPC 76 in June.

Panama, Norway, Greece and other actors are co-sponsoring a proposal originally tabled by Japan to curb the carbon intensity of existing ships through use of an Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI), much like the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) which is mandatory for new ships.
