Mozambique: Govt Adopts Code of Conduct on Piracy

Djibouti Code of Conduct The Council of Ministers (Cabinet) on Thursday approved Mozambique's adoption of the Code of Conduct concerning the Repression of Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in the Western Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden, also known as the "Djibouti Code of Conduct".The Djibouti Code facilitates the sharing of information among countries in the region and actions to repress maritime piracy.Speaking to reporters shortly after the Cabinet meeting, government spokesperson Deputy Minister of Mineral Resources Abdul Razak explained that Mozambique's accession to the Code "will allow Mozambique to share information among member countries in the region and will give access to technical training and support for the purchase of equipment for the fight against piracy".The Djibouti Code, which became effective on 29 January 2009, promotes the implementation of a number of United Nations Security Council and UN General Assembly resolutions which fall within the competence of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).So far 19 out of 21 eligible countries have signed the Djibouti Code of Conduct. IMO signs strategic counter-piracy capacity building partnerships with UN agencies and EU

Conference on Capacity Building to Counter Piracy off the Coast of Somalia The commitment of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to combat piracy off the coast of Somalia through boosting capacity building in the region has been underlined with the signing of five strategic partnerships with a number of UN agencies and the EU, following a Conference on Capacity Building to Counter Piracy off the Coast of Somalia, held at IMO Headquarters in London on 15 May 2012.The Conference was attended by some 300 delegates from States as well as a number of organizations. Piracy centres expand information network

Agreement for communicating and exchanging piracy-related information The piracy information-sharing infrastructure covering Asia and the Indian Ocean has been significantly enhanced with the signing today (11 November 2011) of an important agreement in Singapore.The agreement, signed by the three Information Sharing Centres (ISCs) set up under the IMO-led Djibouti Code of Conduct and the Singapore-based ReCAAP ISC, establishes a set of standard operating procedures for communicating and exchanging piracy-related information and will result in a major expansion of the reporting area of such incidents.Under the Djibouti Code of Conduct (The Code of Conduct concerning the Repression of Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in the Western Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden, signed in Djibouti on 29 January 2009), three ISCs have been established, in Dar es Salaam, United Republic of Tanzania, Mombasa, Kenya and Sana'a, Yemen.The three ISCs were declared operational during the first half of 2011 and have since actively collected and disseminated piracy-related information. Regional training centre in Djibouti foundation stone laid

To promote the implementation of the Code of Conduct concerning piracy As part of IMO's efforts to promote the implementation of the Code of Conduct concerning the Repression of Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in the Western Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden (Djibouti Code of Conduct), the foundation stone of the building set to house a regional training centre in Djibouti was laid during a ceremony in Djibouti on Saturday (29 October 2011).
