Oman has become the 16th state to sign the Jeddah Amendment to the Djibouti Code of Conduct, the instrument developed and adopted by countries in the Western Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden to repress piracy and armed robbery against ships operating in the region.

Somalia has become the 14th signatory to the Jeddah Amendment to the Djibouti Code of Conduct. The Amendment broadened the scope of the Djibouti Code, covering measures for suppressing a range of illicit activities, including piracy, arms trafficking, trafficking in narcotics, human trafficking, human smuggling etc.

IMO announced that Kenya has become the 13th country to sign the Jeddah Amendment to the Djibouti Code of Conduct. The Code is an instrument developed and adopted by countries in the Western Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden, in repressing piracy and armed robbery against ships operating in that region.

The key IMO instrument helping to repress piracy and armed robbery against ships in the Western Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden, called "the Djibouti Code of Conduct" is part of discussions at an international conference in Morocco, IMO informed.

Ministerial meeting agrees to launch process for handing over implementation of the Djibouti Code Ministers from participating States in the Code of Conduct concerning the Repression of Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in the Western Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden (the Djibouti Code of Conduct) have recognized the need to develop a mechanism for the region to run its own counter-piracy agenda, following the successful implementation by IMO of numerous projects aimed at improving regional capacity to counter piracy by developing enhanced regional cooperation and coordination.A high-level meeting, held at IMO Headquarters in London on 30 May, agreed a resolution on future work under the Djibouti Code of Conduct. The resolution envisages the immediate launch of work to establish a new structure for regional implementation of the Djibouti Code of Conduct, with IMO playing a supportive role during a transitional period. Adopted at Ministerial meeting IMO has pledged its support to assist in the implementation of a new Code of Conduct concerning the prevention and repression of piracy, armed robbery against ships and illicit maritime activity in west and central Africa, which has been adopted at a Ministerial meeting in Cotonou, Benin.The Code is expected to be opened for signature at the meeting of the Heads of State and Government of Central and West African States, expected to be held in Yaoundé, Cameroon, in May 2013.
