The winners of ISWAN’s International Seafarers’ Welfare Awards 2016 were announced on 24th June at a ceremony held in Manila, the Philippines. The awards were presented by IMO Secretary General Mr Kitack Lim to seven recipients who have provided exceptional services for the welfare and wellbeing of seafarers.

IMO Secretary General pushed for the increased involvement of women in the seafaring industry saying during his speech for the Day of the Seafarers at the SM Convention Center in Pasay City, that women are ''the key to the growth of the industry''.

Millions of people around the world celebrated the Day of the Seafarer on 25 June, under the IMO campaign theme, #AtSeaForAll.

Gerardo Borromeo, Vice Chairman of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) highlighted the courage that is currently being displayed by seafarers, of all nationalities, with respect to the rescue at sea crisis taking place in Europe and in the Mediterranean.

Frank Coles, CEO of Transas has sent his message to all seafarers commemorating the International Day of the Seafarer on June 26yh, 2016. Being an ex-seafarer, he highlights the challenges of seafaring and invites the younger generation to consider a career at sea.

SSI has announced it has developed the concept of a ‘Seafarers' On-board Charter’ – a best practice charter that can be adopted by ship owners and operators to further enhance the welfare of seafarers beyond the mandatory standards of MLC. The announcement coincides with the IMO Day of the Seafarer on 25th June 2016

ISWAN announced that it will be holding an event to celebrate the IMO Day of the Seafarer on 25th June 2016. The celebrations – aimed at seafarers and their families – will be held in Manila, the Philippines, at the SMX Conference Centre. The event will be addressed by the IMO Secretary General, Mr Kitack Lim. It is supported by the ITF, ICS, AMOSUP, IMEC, InMarsat, and Wrist Ship Supply.
