IMO supports the Day of the Seafarer 2012 through social media

On 25 June 2012 - Learn how you may help 25 June of each year is the "Day of the Seafarer", recognizing the invaluable contribution seafarers make to international trade and the world economy, often at great personal cost to themselves and their families.Governments, shipping organizations, companies, shipowners and all other parties concerned are invited to promote and celebrate the Day in an appropriate and meaningful manner.The Day of the Seafarer was first celebrated in 2011, following its establishment by a resolution adopted by the Conference of Parties to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), 1978, held in Manila, Philippines, in June 2010, which adopted major revisions to the STCW Convention and Code.The Day of the Seafarer has now been included in the annual list of United Nations Observances.This year, the concept consist of using the phrase: It came by the sea and I can't live without it, asking people around the world to share and show something that came by sea and for which they are thankful for. The Day of the Seafarer was first celebrated in 2011 The International Maritime Organization (IMO) Assembly has adopted a resolution establishing 25 June as the annual "Day of the Seafarer", "recognising the invaluable contribution seafarers make to international trade and the world economy, often at great personal cost to themselves and their families," said the IMO."The resolution invites governments, shipping organisations, companies, shipowners and all other parties concerned to promote and celebrate the Day in an appropriate and meaningful manner".The Day of the Seafarer was first celebrated in 2011, and has now been included in the annual list of United Nations observances.Source: ITF

IMO Assembly adopts wide range of resolutions

Actions, Strategic plans, budget and resolutions adopted by the Assembly A wide range of resolutions, reflecting the broad canvas of the Organization's work, was adopted by the 27th Assembly of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), when it met in London at the Organization's Headquarters from 21 to 30 November 2011. They included a resolution urging Governments to continue their efforts to combat piracy and armed robbery against ships off the coast of Somalia and a resolution firmly establishing 25 June each year as the "Day of the Seafarer".The Assembly also adopted the high-level action and strategic plans for the Organization; the Organization's budget for 2012 to 2013; and several updated codes and guidance documents. Join the IMO Thank you seafarers campaign The first-ever international Day of the Seafarer will be celebrated on 25 June 2011 to pay tribute to the world's 1.5 million seafarers who provide a unique contribution to the shipping industry and the carriage of 90% of world trade.The Day of the Seafarer not only represents an opportunity to recognise seafarers' efforts and invaluable contribution to shipping and trade, but is also a very welcome occasion to inform people that do not deal with the shipping industry on a day-to-day basis about the fascinating life of modern-day seafarers, thereby contributing to attracting and retaining qualified crew.On this Day, however, it is equally appropriate to focus on challenges which seafarers may face as part of their profession, such as the risks of piracy attacks and unfair treatment. Philippines will celebrate the Day of the Seafarer

On June 25 The Philippines government is marking the international Day of the Seafarer 25 June as the Day of the Filipino Seafarer.The Filipino seafarers deserve respect, recognition and gratitude for their invaluable contribution to the national development efforts of the country, and have become sailing ambassadors for having demonstrated before the global maritime community the best traits of the Filipino, a government statement said.There were around 330,424 Filipino seafarers deployed worldwide in 2009, making up almost a quarter of all Filipinos working overseas.Source: ITF
