Royal Caribbean’s cruise ship 'Empress of the Seas' rescued two Costa Rican fishermen who were adrift for a total of 20 days between Jamaica and Cuba. Miraculously, the cruise ship's scheduled route for that time was Cienfuegos, Cuba, but she could not operate tenders in heavy storms and the Captain opted to a port with a pier. 

The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) announced a global cruise industry commitment to reduce the rate of carbon emissions across the industry fleet by 40% by 2030. Through this, cruise has become the first maritime industry which makes a joint carbon emissions commitment to sustainability on the seas.

German cruise shipbuilder Meyer Werft announced that it has delivered the world’s first LNG-fueled cruise ship to AIDA Cruises. 'AIDANova' is the largest cruise ship ever built in Germany, setting new standards in terms of environmental sustainability as the LNG technology is expected to significantly reduce emissions. 

In early December, Celebrity Cruises held a naming ceremony for its newest ship 'Celebrity Edge'. Celebrity Edge is the company's first new ship in six years and first new ship series in more than a decade. The ship is known for promoting women in multiple roles onboard, as well as for the way the company's CEO, Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, is working to boost women leadership in shipping industry. 

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) announced that its Global Executive Committee has appointed Kelly Craighead as President and Chief Executive Officer as from 1 January 2019. Mrs. Craighead will be taking over the role currently held by Cindy D'Aoust, who in July of this year announced her intent to leave her position by year’s end.

A new study found that cruise tourism and the 29.6 million passenger and crew onshore visits in 36 Caribbean and Latin American destinations generated a record $3.36 billion in total expenditures during the last cruise year. This is more than 6% higher than the record set by the previous study in 2015.

The 691-foot-long cruise ship Silver Spirit crashed into a mooring dolphin in Key West, on November 28, due to heavy winds. Because of the crash, Mallory Square will be unusable for three months. The ship was not significantly damaged, while no injuries were reported.

Celebrity Cruises' newest ship 'Celebrity Edge' was named by the Pakistani activist and youngest Nobel Prize laureate, Malala Yousafzai, in a ceremony held Tuesday in Florida. Celebrity Edge is the company's first new ship in six years and first new ship series in more than a decade. The ship's highlight is that it has set a landmark with the major involvement of women in its development and manning.

The new cruise venture Virgin Voyages announced plans to build a new cruise terminal at PortMiami. On the occasion, Virgin Voyages also announced that its first ship, the Scarlet Lady, will continue to sail to the Caribbean from Miami throughout 2021. The company’s second ship will sail from Miami during the fall/winter cruise season of 2021/22.
