Spirit of Discovery completed its conveyance across the river Ems on May 26 at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. After sailing through the Ems barrier, the ship reached the Emden sea lock, with the help of tugs. The cruise ship is the first of two vessels ordered from Meyer Werft by Saga Cruises. It has an overall length of 236 meters and a width of 31.2 meters.

The Panama Canal reported the closing of the 2018-2019 cruise season. The closing was marked with the transit of the Panamax cruise ship Pacific Princess, with a capacity of 670 passengers, which took place on May 22. From October 1, 2018 to September 30, 2019, the Panama Canal will register 242 transits of passenger ships with over 260,000 passengers.

Hurtigruten, expedition cruise line signed a deal with Norway-based Biokraft to supply climate-neutral liquified biogas (LBG) – and power ships with fuel made from dead fish and other organic waste. The partnership includes near-daily delivery of biogas produced from organic waste to Hurtigruten ships, the first cruise ships in the world to be powered by fossil-free LBG.

The US Port Canaveral, in east Florida, and Disney Cruise Line have reached a new 20-year agreement to expand operations and make Port Canaveral home for two of Disney Cruise Line’s three new ships. The new operating agreement will begin on 1st June 2019.

Gazpromneft Marine Bunker, operator of the Gazprom Neft bunkering business, came into a partnership with Royal Caribbean International and Saga Cruises. The agreement sees Gazpromneft managing about 60 bunkering operations for the two partners during the summer navigation season, starting in May until September 2019.

An £80,000 network of air pollution monitors, funded by the Port of London Authority, is now in place, ready to record the effect of emissions locally from cruise ships docking in Greenwich this summer. The eight monitoring stations are located close to the Greenwich Ship Tier landing stage. They will capture data all day long, with the raw data available at the websites of both the PLA and Breathe London.

Crewmembers of the Carnival Fascination managed to rescue a man that went overboard on May 18. As Carnival informs, the passenger had jumped from Deck 10, with the crew and passengers immediately notifying the bridge team of the incident. Once informed of the incident, the bridge team returned the vessel to the location of the incident. The captain then deployed a rescue boat, with the crew bringing the victim back onboard.

NYK Cruises informed that the cruise ship Asuka II, the largest cruise vessel carrying the Japanese flag, will undergo works at the Sembcorp Marine Admiralty Yard in Singapore from the middle of January 2020, during which it will be retrofitted with a scrubber. Earlier during 2018, NYK Line had announced that it has secured a USD 80.65 million syndicated loan agreement with MUFG Bank Ltd., with the aim to install scrubbers.

Norway posed a fine of 700,000 NOK (=USD 80,346) to the cruise ship 'MS Magellan', owned by the Greek shipping company Global Cruise Lines Ltd, for violating the legislation on fuel sulphur limits in the world heritage fjords.

91% of passengers and crew onboard the cruise ship 'Freewinds', owned by the Church of Scientology, that is quarantined off Curacao, are now immune to measles and are free to leave the ship, according to local health officials. 199 of the 216 crew members and 91 of the 102 passengers were vaccinated or were immune, and had sufficient levels of antibodies against measles.
