After a cruise ship collided with a dock and a tourist boat in Venice on June 2 in the Giudecca Canal, the historic preservation association Italia Nostra stated that large ships should no longer travel along that channel.  Specifically, Italia Nostra said that the June accident shows that Venice is at serious risk and called for a ban of cruise ships in the city.

As Port of Riga informed, four cruise ships called the port on Wednesday, June 19. This number is the largest ever that the port has hosted and reflects the ports capacity and potential. According to Riga Central Terminal Board Member Valdis Andersons 'Given that the city’s zoning has changed, a vision of the future has been created in which we can handle RoRo cargo here, engage in passenger transportation and welcome cruise ships.'

As the cruise company informed Fox News, a crewmember from the MSC Seaview cruise ship dived into the water to save a passenger who 'chose, on her own will, to jumb overboard' in Italy. The unidentified Irish woman allegedly jumped from the MSC Seaview cruise ship while it was at the Italian cit of Genoa. 

After President Trump's decision on banning US cruises to Cuba, many were the cruise lines affected; Carnival Corporation published its yearly net income, according to which the cruise company faced a decrease following cruise bans to Cuba.

Danish Company Knud E. Hansen announced its latest design for a sail-assisted cruise vessel that is able to accommodate up to 100 passengers and has a variety of 6,000 nautical miles. The vessel combines low-sulphur diesel and wind power, making it able to sail to emission control areas and makes it be in line with IMO's regulations. 

Carnival Corporation published its ninth annual sustainability report, outlining the key initiatives and progress made in 2018 toward its 2020 sustainability performance goals. The full 2018 report, "Sustainability from Ship to Shore," was developed in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative standard.

The Founder of Virgin Group, Sir Richard Branson, and Virgin Voyages President and CEO Tom McAlpin announced the appointment of Captain Wendy Williams as Master of Scarlet Lady, the cruise line's first ship. 

The first cruise ship of the season, the 596 guest Silversea Cruises Silver Muse, will dock at the Port of Nanaimo, on Sunday, June 16. The vessel will arrive from Prince Rupert Sunday at 8 a.m., departing at 10 p.m. Tourism Nanaimo and Ambassadors from the Nanaimo Hospitality Association will be at the terminal and throughout downtown to greet and advise passengers on what to do during their stay.

Around 50 activists, with banners reading 'Cruises kill climate', delayed the Holland America Line-operated 'Zuiderdam', from departing the North Sea port of Kiel, on June 9. The ship managed to leave the port after six hours, heading to Copenhagen, as the police temporarily detained 46 activists, some of whom climbed onto the ship and onto a harbourside crane.

Responding to a recent report by T&E critisizing the cruise industry's emissions, CLIA said the results have been published without any academic scrutiny. It also cited significant investments in scrubbers and LNG over the last years, noting that the industry is fully committed to a zero emission future.
