In light of the COVID-19 pandemic and the disruption that has caused within the shipping industry, Chinese ports experience substantial delays to vessels carrying imported coal to China, in particular coal loaded in Australia.

Many of China’s major bulk imports, such as iron ore and crude oil, have seen strong growth so far this year despite the COVID-19 pandemic, but  imports of coal have followed the opposite trajectory, says Peter Sand, Chief Analyst at BIMCO.

An international energy consultancy launched the "Rapid pivot to gas" report highlighting that turning to gas will be the solution to deal with the increasing global energy demand. This assumption expects the phasing out of coal and oil in response to vehicle electrification and environmental pressures, along with a rapid and robust increase in renewable production.

According to a recent statement, the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy (FE) has announced an up to $4 million in federal funding for cost-shared research and development (R&D) projects under the funding opportunity announcement (FOA) DE-FOA-0002190, Research for Innovative Emission Reduction Technologies Related to Coal Combustion Residuals.

Despite the fact that certain ports in India have experienced lack of low-sulphur compliant fuel oil, India's oil industry in general is estimated to grow during 2020. According to Wood Mackenzie, due to the increased demand of India's oil products by about 220 kb/d, India will face a beneficial year.

Tsuneishi Shipbuilding, Japanese shipbuilder, delivered the "Sunshine Pride" coal carrier to work for Joban Joint Power, operated by NYK Line, while a delivery ceremony was conducted at the same time. The vessel has been already equipped with a scrubber system, compliant with IMO's regulations, making it environmentally friendly.

Energy produced at coal-fired thermal stations made up less than 5% of all electricity generated in 2019 in Spain, as natural gas and renewables become more profitable options. According to figures that Red Eléctrica de España (REE), the national power grid operator, advanced to EL PAÍS, the country has dramatically reduced its reliance on coal-fired power, and as a direct result, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from electricity generation fell 33.3% in 2019.

China's imports of crucial commodities are presenting a rapid development the last months, showing that Beijing's efforts may lead to a fruitful outcome and its trade dispute with the US may not be as harmful as expected, according to Reuters' Clyde Russell.

According to the recent report "Global Coal Power Set for Record Fall in 2019" published by Carbon Brief, the global electricity production of coal is about to fall by 3% for the 2019, making it the largest drop on record. The analysis was based on the monthly electricity sector data from every country, of the first seven months of 2019, compared with the same period in the preceding year.
