The Transportation Safety Board of Canada will be using a team of investigators to Vancouver Harbour, British Columbia, after a collision between the M.V. Caravos Harmony and the M.V. Pan Acacia took place on March 17. TSB did not reveal any further information regarding the damages, injuries or pollution, but it said that it will gather information and assess the occurrence.

A Panamax bulker collided with a fishing vessel in Zhejiang Province waters, on February 23. At the time of the incident, the fishing vessel had seven crew on board. Of them, two were rescued, while the remaining five are missing. The bulk carrier was heading from Tangshan, China, Yellow sea, to Zhuhai, South China. The ship received orders to stop its voyage, and wait for investigation.

A robber attacked and stole fuel from a bulk carrier that was anchored at China’s Caofeidian Anchorage, on February 10. Namely, the duty officer on board the ship notice that a hose was connected from a tank. The alarm was raised and the robber lowered the hose and escaped. It was reported that DO had been stolen and the incident was reported to VTS Caofeidian.

Serious technical problems with cranes slowed down the deployment of ESL Shipping’s new LNG-fueled bulk carriers, the Finland-based shipping company, part of the ASPO Group, stated. The problems in the conventional mechanics of high-power cranes, which are subject to warranty, have significantly interfered with the efficient operations of both vessels.

North P&I Club has launched a new series of bite-sized training packs to help seafarers avoid the contributing factors to workplace casualties. The first training pack focuses on the Can Test, the IMSBC complementary test for bulk cargoes, to address suspected bulk cargo liquefaction, which has claimed lives of an estimated 112 seafarers since 2007. 

BHP, NYK, GoodFuels and BLOC, announced the successful delivery of biofuels to the NYK-owned bulk carrier Frontier Sky, with CO2 savings verified with BLOC’s blockchain fuels assurance platform. The biofuel, supplied by GoodFuels, is a ‘drop-in’ marine gasoil-equivalent, and was blended with conventional fossil-based MGO in a mix of 30% biofuel to 70% conventional MGO.

Dozens of ships that are carrying coal and iron ore to China are waiting outside ports to unload, as harbour authorities are taking more time than usual to clear the imports with customs officials. In fact, over 300 dry-bulk freighters are waiting to deliver into China. Of them, most affected are those carrying coal and iron ore from Australia.

As the Swedish Club informs, a bulk carrier had loaded yellow corn in all cargo holds up to the hatch coamings. After the loading, fumigation technicians fumigated the cargo with fumitoxin pellets. A couple of hours later an explosion took place in one of the holds. The fumigant pellets in each hold had not been distributed across the entire cargo surface, or applied to the subsurface.

In its latest cargo claims review, the Swedish Club informs of a cargo damage incident on a bulk carrier, caused by leaking hatch covers. The incident highlights the need for a regular inspection of the hatch covers by the crew to ensure that the weathertight integrity is maintained.

While Frontier Jacaranda was navigating for Rotterdam, Netherlands, it received a call from the UK’s Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre. The ship immediately headed to the instructed area and rescued a British yachtsman. The individual was in good health and delivered to the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre of the Republic of Cabo Verde on January 20.
