An industry partnership comprising Eidesvik Offshore, Wärtsilä Norway and DNV GL announced the closure of the FellowSHIP research project, which has been exploring the use of battery, hybrid and fuel cell technology in the maritime industry for over 15 years.

In its latest report, IMCA informed about an incident involving batteries. Namely, the batteries of a remote valve control system had been overheated in an instrument room. When the crew isolated them, they found that one of the batteries had started smouldering, because of the overheating.

The Port of Long Beach will use a $5.3 million grant from the California Air Resources Board to deploy hydrogen- and electric-powered cargo-handling equipment at two shipping terminals. The funds for the project is part of California Climate Investments, an initiative to reduce GHG emissions, improving the environment.

Equinor has installed the world’s first battery for offshore wind 'Batwind' at the first floating offshore wind farm Hywind Scotland. With Batwind in operation, it will be possible for the first time to store energy produced from an offshore wind farm. Electricity produced at Hywind Scotland will be transported via cables to an onshore substation where the batteries are placed and connected to the grid.

Norwegian expedition cruise operator Hurtigruten and Rolls-Royce signed a Letter of Intent for an environmental upgrade programme to hybrid power. Namely, the main engines on up to nine cruise ships will switch from diesel to gas power, and will also have a hybrid battery system. Six existing passenger cruise vessels will be equipped, with an option for a further three.

During his presentation at the last GREEN4SEA Conference, Mr. Stylianos Mavrelos, Technical Director, Capital Ship Management, addressed different compliance options and ULSFO availability. As postponement of the Sulphur cup regulation seems unlikely, due to a number constraints presented, it is expected that the majority of the vessels will continue burning ULSFO and or MGO.

Stena Line signed a contract with Callenberg Technology Group for batteries with a capacity of 1 MWh which will be installed on Stena Jutlandica which operates between Gothenburg and Frederikshavn. The battery power in port operation will start before summer.

Port of Auckland informed that a battery-powered truck has entered the port's fleet for the first time, testing the feasibility of zero-emission freight hauling. It’s the only electric truck alongside more than 6,000 diesel-powered vehicles registered at the Port.
