Port of Ferrol accommodates LNG supply operations for the first time

The port of Ferrol has hosted liquefied natural gas (LNG) refueling operations to ships that use this product as fuel, instead of fuel oil or diesel oil. The two operations were performed on February 23 and 24 respectively. They were carried out on the outer jetty, which is the dock of the inner dock where small and medium-sized cruise ships usually dock when they visit the city.

Watch: Polaris, Finland’s new gas-fuelled icebreaker

Polaris, as being the newest addition to Finland's fleet, is the first icebreaker that runs on LNG, a lower-carbon alternative to the diesel fuel which powers most large ships. The icebreaker is keeping shipping lanes open for about six months, enabling the voyage of cargo ships that carry steel, paper products and chemicals in and out of the ports serving northern Finland and neighbouring Sweden.

Port of Langnas to have rope-free mooring system

Trelleborg will provide to the Port of Langnas an automated rope-free mooring system, 'AutoMoor'. The system uses smart technologies to enable a faster berthing process and improve safety levels within the port environment. The port has international cruise ferry and domestic ro-ro ferry berths and is situated in the Baltic Sea, on the archipelago of Aland which has ferry traffic between Sweden and Finland via Aland.

World’s first LNG icebreaker refuels in Finland

IB Polaris is the first icebreaker in the world to use an LNG engine and has bunkered  LNG at the Tornio LNG terminal in Röyttä Harbour. Polaris joined the fleet of Finland’s icebreaker operator Arctia in September 2016. Except the use of LNG, the lubricant used in the vessel's propulsion system is biodegradable. The ship’s gray water, which basically consists of showering water, is collected to a container which is emptied during port calls.
