Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd announced that it conducted a test on a remotely operated subsea vehicle (subsea ROV) to inspect the submerged areas of the hull on an MOL Marine-operated cable-laying ship. Those taking part to the test, confirmed the operability of the subsea ROV.

DNV GL launched an artificial intelligence research centre in Shanghai, aiming to find solutions to improve its audit, inspection and survey services. DNV GL aims to develop new solutions based on AI technology, such as computer vision. The new research centre will grow up to eight staff by the end of 2019. In addition, blockchain has become a key technology to the company's assurance operations.

MAN Energy Solutions introduced its new digital platform. MAN CEON collects and evaluates operating and sensor data, and enables the real-time monitoring of marine or power-plant engines, turbines and compressors. It also integrates data and information from MAN machinery and its operational environment, and uses intelligent analysis tools for evaluation and forecasting.

As automation is becoming an integral part of everyday life, the shipping industry makes no exception. Mr. Dimitrios Lyrakos, Chief Executive Officer, ASCOT Consulting LTD, describes how automation will affect the maritime sector, saying that the number of seafarers will decline, but these changes will create new job opportunities as well.

Wärtsilä announced that it successfully tested its remote guidance service, a digital way of optimizing vessel repaid and maintenance operations. By using augmented reality 'wearables' and a remote guidance software, the interested parties will achieve real-time communication, with personnel onshore, located anywhere in the world.

Denmark aims to a smart and sustainable future with the launch of ShippingLab this March. The platform will be used for maritime research, development and innovation and consists of 30 partners. The project is scheduled to run for three years.

NYK partners with Monohakobi Technology Institute (MTI) and Japan Marine Science (JMS) to develop a system that assists with vessel berthing. The patent helps a vessel to be easily controlled and also visualizes the challenges in the berthing operation to decrease the burden on the operator and mitigate accidents caused by human factors.
