Life onboard is facing new challenges amid the COVID-19 crisis, as seafarers have to be extra persistent when it comes to their hygiene routine, they have to be cautious in case of an infected person onboard, while the whole shipping industry, such as flag States, companies and masters, have to collaborate to ensure seafarers’ safety and follow measures for the virus’ containment.

American Club informs that in some ports, regulations designed to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus have prevented, and continue to prevent, third-party surveyors from attending vessels about to load finished steel products.

The US Treasury Department announced additional US sanctions against Iran, in response to the state's missile attack against a US air base in Iraq, making now trade with Iran in almost all industry sectors off limits for US, as well as non-US persons. 

ABS, the American Club, and Lamar University (Lamar) are calling on industry to promote the cause of safety at sea with more comprehensive reporting requirements for injury and near miss reporting. This call comes after an industry-wide project analyzing more than 12,000 injury records.

The American Club recently made market presentations to its Members, brokers and other friends and supporters in London and Athens. Its gathering in London on December 3 was hosted at Trinity House, while its reception in Athens on December 5 took place at the Yacht Club of Greece in Piraeus.

The World Maritime University (WMU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with American P&I Club's American Hellenic Hull Insurance Company Limited (AHHIC) for future cooperation in line with IMO's sustainability principles.

The American Club published 'Bunkering - A Compedium' report, providing details on approaches towards loss prevention initiatives, demanded by both regulations and by supplying guidance on operations and management, ashore and afloat, aimed at obviating exposures with both a P&I and FD&D insurance implications.

The American Club recently experienced an increase in illness claims regarding heat exposure. In order to supply a loss prevention response to this trend, the Club collaborated with Wise Health Inc. Seafarer Outreach to produce guidance to improve seafarers' awareness of measures to avoid such illnesses. The guidance describes heat-related illnesses, and discusses proactive measures to prevent them.

During the 2019 Hellenic American maritime Forum in Athens, Mrs. Elina Souli, Regional Business Development Director, V.P. – FD&D Manager, The American P&I Club, talked about the cost and exposure of P&I incidents, which has increased substantially.
