Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH) will collaborate with Alaska Native-owned Huna Totem Corporation to build a second cruise pier in Icy Strait Point, Huna Totem’s world-class cruise ship destination in Hoonah, Alaska.

The northern Bering Sea and Bering Strait region has been an ecological, cultural, and economic center for Yup’ik, Cup’ik, St. Lawrence Island Yupik, and Inupiaq peoples for millennia. Yet, recently, a combination of factors, including less sea ice and more trade and resource development, has resulted to an increased vessel traffic in the region led by huge cargo vessels, tugs, and research vessels, and is expected to continue growing.

The Alaska Hydrokinetic Energy Research Center carried out a multibeam bathymetry survey and a land survey of Cannon Beach in Yakutat, Alaska. This aims to create a 3D map of the beach, under a US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management-funded project to assess wave energy in Alaska.

The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management issued conditional approval to Hilcorp Alaska for its Liberty Project oil and gas development and production plan. If developed, the facility will be the first oil and gas production facility in federal waters off Alaska.

A boat ran aground on Saturday, September 29 in Puget Bay, Alaska, after its engine failed. The USCG responded on the site of the incident and rescued three men. An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from US Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak landed on scene, helped the men off the 25-foot boat and brought them to Seward.

A man lost his life on the Davidson Glacier River near Haines, Alaska, after a canoe with 11 people on board capsized on Monday, July 30. The canoe was being used as a guided tour of Glacier Point for passengers from three different cruise ships. The remaining passengers were rescued.

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Coast Survey announced launch of hydrographic expeditions through July and August to discover what lies underneath the water’s surface. Currently only 4.1% of the US maritime Arctic has been charted to modern international navigation standards.

On July 14, the fishing vessel 'Kristi' lost power near Clark's Point, a Bristol Bay village near Dillingham, Alaska. The boat became trapped between two ships and its crew escaped moments before the vessel sank. USCG is currently investigating the incident, in order to identify the causes of it.

A USCG helicopter crew and the crew of a good Samaritan fishing vessel rescued three people from the sinking fishing vessel 'Leona' in the Sitka Sound, Alaska, on Monday. USCG Sector Juneau watchstanders received a report at 10:30 p.m. that the vessel was taking on water and the bilge pumps were unable to keep up with the rate of flooding.
