Japanese shipping company MOL announced its intention to install a navigation system using augmented reality (AR) technology jointly developed by Furuno Electric and MOL Techno-Trade, on 21 MOL-operated very large crude oil carriers (VLCCs).
CHIRP issued its 54th Maritime Feedback, focusing on several reports outlining the anomalies between a vessel’s AIS and ECDIS, and positions obtained from a PPU or by visual/radar position fixing. The incident results to the fact that incorrect AIS offsets at the installation stage can also cause a great deal of confusion and may require a visit from a technician to access the pass code.
SkyTruth, environmental monitoring organization that watches for illegal activity using satellite data, spotted a slick near the Northern tip of Indonesia’s Bangka Belitung Islands. The slick was captured by radar satellite, Sentinel-1, on the evening of January 8, 2019.
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore is co-organising a workshop with the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA) to support the operationalisation of e-navigation solutions. This is the first workshop since Singapore’s election to the IALA Council in 2018. The MPA-IALA e-navigation workshop will take place from 8 to 10 April.
ORBCOMM, a provider of Machine-to-Machine and Internet of Things solutions, announced that Canada has exercised the option for an additional year on their contract through ORBCOMM’s Canadian partner Maerospace, a supplier of AIS data and maritime domain awareness solutions. ORBCOMM will be providing satellite AIS data for ship tracking and other maritime navigational and safety efforts to Canada.
The Portuguese Ports of Lisbon and Setúbal/Sesimbra have installed a Vessel Traffic Service solution, manufactured by Wärtsilä. The systems aim to enhance the efficiency of these ports by reducing waiting time for vessels and allowing just-in-time pilotage. The VTS software has extensive functionalities, and the solution is modular, scalable, and accessible for future upgrade developments.
Bunker vessels could be proven useful in tracking down illegal fishing and discover the criminal networks behind it, an Australian study indicated. Illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, is very difficult to monitor and many of the ships involved in the illegal practice operate far from shore, where surveillance is not easy to take place.
MOL announced that MOL Techno-Trade, the National Maritime Research Institute, and Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology carried out an assessment and feasibility study on advanced navigation support systems, using the NMRI-owned ship handling risk simulator.
The US National Transportation Safety Board’s Office of Marine Safety installed a navigation simulator system. The simulator enables the user to participate in a number of ‘what if’ scenarios, that aims to improve training, forensic analysis and reflective learning.
