The IMO Sub-Committee on Pollution Prevention and Response (PPR 10), 24-28 April 2023, discussed measures to prevent hazardous chemicals from entering the marine environment. These materials include Hazardous and Noxious Substances (HNS) and cleaning additives.

AMSA is seeking for feedback up to January 8th, 2023 with regards to the proposed changes to Marine Order 98 that deals with the prevention of pollution from anti-fouling systems. The ban on cybutryne will begin on 1 January 2023. The new regulations will prohibit all ships from applying or re-applying anti-fouling systems which contain cybutryne.

The IMO's MEPC 76 took place virtually from 10 to 17 June 2021, adopting amendments to MARPOL Annex VI that will require ships to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, in line with the 2018 Initial IMO Strategy. The meeting also adopted an HFO ban for ships in Arctic. Both decisions were seen as inadequate by green groups and a significant part of the industry. 

IMO's Sub-Committee on Pollution Prevention and Response (PPR) will conduct a meeting on 18 to 22 February to IMO's headquarters, London. IMO's agenda includes MARPOL Annex VI guidelines, safety measures on reducing the risks of use and carriage of heavy fuel oil, as well as measures aiming to decrease the impact on the Arctic of Black Carbon emissions from international shipping. 

IMO informed that Ukraine has ratified two important treaties, that help to protect the marine environment, the International Convention on Salvage and the Control of Harmful Anti-fouling Systems on Ships.

IMO announced that conducted a national workshop in Antananarivo, Madagascar, on 25-27 April, focusing on biofouling and, specifically, raising awareness of the issues and developed capacity for the ratification and implementation of the anti-fouling Systems Convention and the implementation of the Biofouling Guidelines.

Hong Kong Marine Department informs that the Control of Harmful Anti-Fouling Systems on Ships Regulation will come into force on 1 January 2017.
