​The IMO stated that its Intersessional Working Group on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships has made significant progress with work aiming to help achieve the ambitious targets of the initial IMO strategy regarding the reduction of GHG emissions from ships, further aiming at the decarbonization of the international shipping in this century.

Apart from the ambitious target of the 2020 Global Sulphur Cap set by the IMO, shipowners and operators must also take into considerations the greenhouse gas targets for 2030 and the emissions goals for 2050. ABS informs that the regulatory changes set for 2020, as well as those expected for 2030 and 2050, will be “more disruptive than any past environmental regulations.”

Christopher J. Wiernicki, ABS Chairman, President and CEO, highlighted the future of marine fuels in the shipping industry, stating that in order to achieve the 2050 goals the industry needs better and improved technology.

During the last SAFETY4SEA Hamburg Forum, all experts attempted to provide a picture of the shipping in 50 years from today and imagine how the industry is going to change in order to face upcoming challenges. Namely, the key question raised was: What will be the same in the shipping industry and what will be different in 2050 from your perspective?

During the London International Shipping Week, IMO's Secretary-General, Kitack Lim, highlighted the need make zero-emission ships more commercially attractive, adding that the 2050 GHG goals can not be achieved by only using fossil fuels.

During the London International Shipping Week major stakeholders of the shipping industry such as BIMCO, ICS, and INTERTANKO, discussed about the future of shipping, focusing on the preparations of the implementation of the 2020 sulphur cap, while also discussing the 2050 target on reducing shipping emissions.

LR's James Forsdky Asia Vice President – Hong Kong and Taiwan discussed with Wallem CEO, Frank Coles, about digitalization and the future of the shipping industry. Mr Cole explains that the shipping industry has to adapt to a new attitude to fully embrace digitalization and follow in the successful footsteps of the nuclear, aviation and aerospace industries.
