At the opening press conference of the SMM maritime trade fair in Hamburg, political and business leaders discussed key challenges that shipping has to face, with a special focus on the 2020 sulphur cap and the industry's goal to cut greenhouse gas emissions in half by the year 2050.

In response to imminent fuel sulphur regulations, due to enter into force in less than 18 months, Alfa Laval explains how it prepares the road to address new challenges. Amid the industry's hot debate on how to achieve compliance with the upcoming environmental regulations, and on how these rules are expected to affect companies financially, the world's largest container ship company, Maersk, said that the 2020 sulphur cap will add about USD2 billion to its annual fuel bill. 

In a world's first, Singapore-based BW LPG announced that it has signed contracts including future options for the delivery and retrofitting of four LPG-propelled dual-fuel engines in its fleet, as part of its efforts to prepare for the 2020 sulphur cap.

Golden Ocean Group Limited, a dry bulk shipping company, announced that it signed contracts to install exhaust gas scrubbers on 16 Capesize vessels and options for 9 additional installations. The first sixteen scrubbers will be installed during routine drydocking schedules. Most of them are expected in 2019 or early 2020.

Maersk and Royal Vopak, a tank storage operator active in Rotterdam’s bunker environment, have agreed to launch 0,5% sulphur fuel bunkering facility in Rotterdam. This initiative which will cater for almost 20% of Maersk global demand, will enable the company to deliver about 2.3mt per year.

The clock is ticking towards the 0.5% sulphur cap and although this is about to become effective globally in less than 18 months from today, the route to compliance remains challenging. Earlier in 2018, SAFETY4SEA launched a survey reflecting trends with respect to industry’s readiness to comply with the 0.5% sulphur cap.
