Human Rights at Sea informed that all 16 of the former crew of the MV Liberty Prrudencia were repatriated home on 23 July 2017, and that their wages have been finally paid, after the charity and other organisations, including the ITF, the Indian Consulate and ship managers were first alerted to their plight in February of this year.
In particular, on 10 March 2017, Human Rights at Sea published a detailed investigation study about the case highlighting the human impact of abandonment. This was followed on the 8th April 2017 by the publishing a desperate letter requesting help from the crew.
As HRAS had denounced, the crew had been left onboard the vessel in China without wages since November 2016, suffering personal hardships and distressing effects for their families back home in India. The crew had also been forced to agree to sign-off, but with only one month’s wages and no firm assurance of receiving the remainder of their wages owed.
After their repatriation, the crew sent a thank you letter to the charity and other organisations.
