South Korea is ready to order vessels that will be fueled by LNG, during 2018. With these orders, South Korea attempts to further promote green shipping and enhance the industry, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries informed.
Namely, South Korea will sign an agreement with the state-run Korea Gas Corp., local shipbuilders and provincial port authorities to initiate a project. which aims to to build 80,000-ton LNG-propelled vessels by the end of 2018, news agency Yonhap reports.
A working group will perform a feasibility study in the coming months, in order to find ways ways to improve related industries, the ministry noted.
This development was made in the context of compliance with the IMO sulfur cap on fuels, which be enforced from 2020.
The South Korean government set up a task force consisted of local companies, in order to support the marine transport sector, in compliance with stricter environmental laws, Yonhap concludes.
Earlier this year, South Korea announced the launch of a pilot program to build the world’s largest LNG-powered vessel, aiming to boost green shipping and develop associated industries.
Under the plan, the ministry will join forces with local shipyards, builders and state institutes, to develop a class of 180,000-ton LNG-fueled vessels.
