SAFETY4SEA is pleased to announce the distinguished shortlisted nominees for the 2021 GREEN4SEA Awards, following an online nomination process, initiated a few months ahead of the event, where industry stakeholders proposed nominations. The aim of the awards is to recognize those organizations that demonstrated outstanding performance within the scope of fostering green and sustainable shipping.
GREEN4SEA Sustainability Award
- ABS has been nominated for helping operators establish a pathway for sustainability certification and reporting. Among others, ABS published guides on sustaianbility, launched two new sustainability notations and established Global Sustainability Centers in Athens, Houston and Copenhagen.
- Getting to Zero Coalition by the Global Maritime Forum has been nominated for accelerating maritime shipping’s decarbonization with the development and deployment of commercially viable deep sea zero emission vessels by 2030. It is a powerful alliance of more than 120 maritime organizations.
- Green Fuels Research has been nominated for launching the ‘SALMO project’ in collaboration with the University of Cardiff, and the London South Bank University. The project aims to convert waste biomass from salmon farming into drop-in fuels suitable for use in marine diesel engines.
- IAPH has been nominated for launching the ‘Environmental Ship Index’ (ESI), which is an indicator of the exhaust emissions’ performance of ocean going vessels that assists in identifying cleaner ships that proactively go beyond legal compliance. The index is used by ports to reward cleaner vessels.
- RightShip has been nominated for launching the ‘GHG rating for 2020’ enabling charterers benchmark the emissions profile of a vessel or a fleet. RightShip’s digital platform assists operators to minimize their emissions, providing an overview to charterers of those with an efficient GHG rating.
GREEN4SEA Clean Shipping Award
- ADERCO International has been nomitated for driving innovation to enhance the performance of energy transition in both the shipping and inland sectors. Its unique organic fuel treatment improves fuel efficiency and operational reliability, delivering holistic, end-to-end solutions to operators.
- Blue Water Trade Winds Pvt Ltd has been nominated for its ‘BOSS’ solution which explores all possible voyage scenarios on a weather indexed grid, using a combination of dynamic speed scheduling and weather routing to plan the most optimum voyage schedule.
- HullWiper Ltd. has been nominated for its Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), a global hull cleaning solution that removes fouling without damaging expensive coatings or the environment. It uses adjustable pressure seawater jets to dislodge waste materials and minimise the risk of damage to hull coatings.
- Methanol Institute has been nominated for promoting methanol’s environmental and economic advantages, presenting methanol as an attractive alternative fuel for ships. MI is a global trade Association that represents the world’s leading methanol producers, distributors and technology companies.
- Port of Amsterdam has been nominated for developing a new representation vessel used for visiting the port area. The new ship will be the first ship on the world to use a solid H2-carrier: NaBH4. The ship will have an electric engine and use the H2 from the NaBH4 in its fuelcells.
GREEN4SEA Initiative Award
- GoodFuels has been nominated for achieving major steps in bunkering its Bio-Fuel Oil (BFO), a sustainably sourced biofuel recipe from various certified feedstocks labelled as waste or residue. GoodFuels joined forces with Volkswagen Group, supplying BFO to Patara RoRo carrier, reducing its CO2 emissions 85%.
- HullWiper Ltd. has been nominated for its Online Calculator which informs operators about how much a HullWiper clean will save on their next voyage, taking into account the type of vessel, vessel size, engine type and power, voyage information, chartering rate and fuel type (and so fuel cost).
- IoCurrents has been nominated for its ‘MarineInsight platform’ which leverages true machine learning and AI to predict failures, detect degradation in performance, and reduce fuel consumption and emissions. This Automated Anomaly Detection technology has caught failures to save operators unplanned downtime and critical failures while in operation.
- NAMEPA has been nominated for its CSR/ESG Maritime Sustainability Program, which offers a vehicle to participants to incorporate CSR/ESG strategies such as corporate citizenship, environmental stewardship and leadership/governance as they lean forward to sustainability.
- Wind Assisted Ship Propulsion (WASP) Project has been nominated for investigating how wind solutions can be more commercially attractive for the future in the North Sea region. The project aims to help maritime industry to accelerate its decarbonisation transition, highlighting the wind-assisting propulsion potential.
GREEN4SEA Technology Award
- Alpha Ori Technologies has been nominated for its patented SMARTShip solution which enables shipping to improve efficiency in line with UN SDGs. SMARTShip has yielded significant savings for ship owners globally, providing reliability in operations, bunker fuel savings and reduction in CO2 emissions.
- Filtersafe has been nominated for raising the bar of filtration standards in the ballast water industry. Leveraging advanced science, Filtersafe has integrated 904L grade steel into its filter solutions which is the best fit in terms of increased corrosion resistance, competitive price, and availability.
- Jotun has been nominated for its Hull Skating Solutions for proactive underwater hull cleaning on the market. This unique solution provides market leading hull performance through high performance coating and proactive, efficient, safe and environmentally friendly inspection and cleaning.
- Nippon Paint Marine has been nominated for its highly environmentally safe hull coating Aquaterras which is the world’s first completely biocide free, self-polishing (SPC) antifouling. It contains no heavy biocidal pigments, active ingredients nor silicone and is proven to reduce ship’s drag by up to 10%.
- Solvang has been nominated for working towards the development of ECO LPG-Carriers which their specification and detailed design are based on compny’s unique experience with ECO design. Solvang combines cost-effective means for minimizing the overall fuel consumption, resulting also to emissions reduction.
GREEN4SEA Tanker Operator Award
- BW LPG Pte Ltd has been nominated for making an environmental impact by pioneering clean LPG propulsion in its large gas carrier fleet. It is the world’s largest owner and operator of VLGCs, featuring BW Gemini, the world’s first VLGC to be retrofitted with LPG propulsion technology.
- Odfjell has been nominated for putting sustainability at the heart of its operations with the launch of a sustainability strategy to align company’s focus areas and actions with the UNs SDGs. Odfjell is also a committed member of the UN Global Compact, embracing to ten defined sustainable principles.
- Stena Bulk has been nominated for supporting carbon storage as a significant effort to mitigate emissions caused by shipping. In that regard, the company has recently collaborated with Oil and Gas Climate Initiative (OGCI) energy group, in a feasibility study on carbon capture onboard ships while at sea.
- Synergy Marine Group has been nominated for maintaining high standards of occupational health, safety, and pollution prevention as a policy, imbibing the spirit of ‘Go Green’. Synergy’s consistent efforts for a sustainable and environmentally secure shipping paradigm has achieved prestigious recognition.
- Thome Group has been nominated for launching several new initiatives to reduce plastic usage onboard, in line with the Company’s Core Values on Environmental Protection. Thome has announced an action plan against plastic usage onboard and ashore featuring 10 key steps.
GREEN4SEA Dry Bulk Operator Award
- ADK Maritime Pte Ltd has been nominated for raising awareness through training to all ship and shore staff for minimizing waste and pollution at sea. The company has achieved a first target point and is now creating new monitoring system with regards to sustainability.
- ESL Shipping has been nominated for partnering at the Bulk project that reduces CO2 missions per transport work by up to 50%, achieved through company’s new EU co-funded LNG fuelled vessels Viikki and Haaga with shore power connection and other energy efficiency measures on board.
- Mitsui O.S.K Lines (MOL) has been nominated for investing in energy saving technologies and adapting to green practices to reduce its environmental impact towards a more sustainabile future. Recently, the company announced its intention to use biodiesel fuel.
- Olympic Vision Maritime Co Inc (Onassis Group) has been nominated for tis commitment to greener and sustainanble shipping. It is a newly established dry bulk company (2017) that has already demonstrated excellent results in all safety, environmental, operational and regulatory aspects.
- Synergy Marine Group has been nominated for supporting green practices within the maritime industry. Synergy is currently researching carbon capture technologies at sea and has been campaigning for IMO to develop a more robust thermodynamic framework that maps the entire carbon dioxide cycle.
GREEM4SEA Personality & Leadership Awards
There are no nominees shortlisted for this Award. After consideration and review of a list of “Editor’s Pick” nominees, the SAFETY4SEA Team will announce the winners during the awards presentation. These are special category awards for any individual person that provided industry leadership and contributed towards greener shipping throughout his/her career.
