Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has secured a contract worth $3.44 billion to build 15 liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers for an undisclosed Middle Eastern client, likely QatarEnergy.
According to South Korean news sources, the vessels, each with a capacity of 174,000 cubic meters, are intended for the second phase of Qatar’s major LNG project. Scheduled for delivery by October 2028, this contract represents the largest single deal in the history of the Korean shipbuilder.
To remind, in late September 2023, QatarEnergy announced that it signed an agreement with Korea’s HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) for the construction of 17 ultra-modern LNG carriers.
According to data added to DNV – Maritime’s Alternative Fuels for Shipping (AFI) database, generally a notable surge in orders for liquefied natural gas (LNG) fueled vessels has been observed, with ten new entries during January.
