According to reports, a legal case took action involving two seafarers, an Indonesian and a Filipino in regards to the matter of equal pay and treatment of them and fellow crewmen to their European counterparts.
As the reports state, the Netherlands Institute for Human Rights based in Utrecht is hearing from two seafarers, an Indonesian and a Filipino, who are backed by the Equal Justice Equal Pay Foundation.
The seafarers are seeking to guarantee that they and their colleagues from the two major crewing nations receive the same treatment as their European counterparts.
Reportedly, the Netherlands’ own Equality Act that is in effect since 1994, prohibits discrimination on the basis of race. However, the Dutch government has continuously sanctioned agreements between Dutch shipping companies and unions that said Southeast Asians can be paid less.
According to the reports, both Indonesia and the Philippines are among the top suppliers of seafarers in the global labor market, which means they get to save in paying lesser amounts to most of their workers.
