As a key step towards decarbonization, Port of Barcelona started the bidding process for the pilot project for electricity supply on ships in order to reduce CO₂ emissions by 50% until 2030 and become a carbon neutral by 2050.
As informed, Port of Barcelona launched a tender process as part of a pilot project to ensure onshore power supply for ships calling at Hutchison Ports BEST container terminal.
The estimated value of the project is 5.8 million euros, as marked by the zero phase of the Port of Barcelona Wharf Electrification Plan, and includes the drafting and execution of the project, “the service of connection and disconnection of ships and the maintenance of the installation “.
The pilot’s tender is “a decisive step” because it will allow the launch of the first onshore power supply (OPS) points that are expected to operate on the port’s commercial docks.
What is more, the Wharf Electrification Plan, with a global investment of 90 million euros, is expected to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from port operations by 50% by 2030 to “convert in a carbon neutral port by 2050 “.
With this plan, ships will be able to connect to the general electricity grid once they are moored at the dock, using clean energy with 100% renewable certification of origin.
Concluding, the president of the port, Damià Calvet, has indicated that the set of practical knowledge and data that will be available once the Best pilot project is activated will qualify the port “to collaborate in the development of future regulations that have to regulate the supply of electricity from ships to ports “.
