SAFETY4SEA is pleased to announce that Mr. Peter Broadhurst, Inmarsat has received the 2019 SMART4SEA Personality Award, sponsored by Tototheo Maritime, at a prestigious award ceremony which successfully concluded on January the 29th at Yacht Club of Greece in Athens, the evening ahead of the 2019 SMART4SEA Conference.
Mr. Peter Broadhurst, Senior VP of Safety and Security, Inmarsat Maritime, received the award for his contribution in the field of smarter shipping over the period 2016-2018, having a unique role in advancing both safety and cyber security across the maritime industry, introducing also the development and delivery of both Fleet Safety and Fleet Secure.
Presenting the award Mrs. Mary Kresta, General Manager, Tototheo Maritime said “Shipping is going through change; we see and hear about new technologies, and connected possibilities on an almost daily basis. But while shipping is changing, and technology is advancing, we need to recognize that this is an industry that evolves around human needs and people. In this regard, shipping needs people and in particular, role models that portray the positive development of our industry, such as Peter Broadhurst who has dedicated his career in maritime industry, first at sea as a radio officer, a role which in itself has been replaced by modern technology and then in the rapidly growing maritime communications sector.”
Accepting the award Mr. Peter Broadhurst stated “The maritime industry has given me a fantastic career and I have travelled and met so many interesting people. It is an industry that I am proud of and strive to add value to wherever I can. There is no doubt that the industry, like others, is going to go through unprecedented change in the near future. However like the transition from sail to motor and break bulk to container this industry, due to the people in it, will continue to grow and be successful.”
Over the period 2016-2018, Mr. Peter Broadhurst, SVP, Safety and Security, Inmarsat, played a unique role advancing both safety and cyber security across the maritime industry. Among many initiatives, he oversaw the development and delivery of both Fleet Safety and Fleet Secure, which offer smarter solutions to the industry. Fleet Safety is a new maritime voice and data service which anticipates the modernization of IMO’s GMDSS, sustained by Inmarsat since the public service inception in 1999. Fleet Secure is Inmarsat’s game-changing Unified Threat Management service to protect ships and shipping against cyberattacks, malware, and other vulnerabilities. In bringing both Fleet Safety and Fleet Secure to market, Peter has continuously stressed the complimentary roles played by smarter shipping and the human element in advancing ship safety and security. Peter has liaised with WMU on cyber security coursework content for Fleet Secure and established Inmarsat as a founding member of the IACS Joint Working Group on Cyber Security. Peter is also one of the leading advocates for formalized cybersecurity risk assessments to be included in the ISM code by 2021.
This is a special category award for any individual person that provided industry leadership and contributed toward smarter shipping throughout his/her career, after consideration and review of a list of “Editor’s Pick” nominees by the SAFETY4SEA Team. SMART4SEA Awards are held annually within the scope of awarding industry’s outstanding practices for e-navigation, connectivity, energy efficiency, cyber security, training and smart shipping technology.
