Fire took place on board a Spanish trawler on May 3, east of Cape Béar on the Franco-Spanish border. A rescue operation saved four crew members, but one died. As of now it is not known why the ship caught fire.
According to information, the crew died because of a cardiac failure.
The French signal station of Bear had sent out the alert at 07:30 a.m. local time, and a SNSM boat rescue craft was deployed to provide assistance to the trawler.
In addition, a good samaritan vessel, the trawler Berto, went to the scene, as well as Salvamento Marítimo rescue boats Alnilam and Sirius.
The victim and the three crew members that survived were transferred to the Spanish port of Selva.
The cause of the fire is still unknown.
