On October 30, the tanker “Chukotka plus”, owned by Chukotka Trading Company, entered the water area of the Northern Sea Route. As it was sailing, the ship was caught in ice and it was unable to move.
Namely, Chukotka was trying to transit from the West to the East.
Before entering into the Sannikov Strait, the vessel was caught in ice, thus it stopped moving. Subsequently, after the ice drift, the tanker sailed to shallows.
In November, the Yamal nuclear ship assisted in the emergency withdrawal of the vessel to a safe place, upon request of the shipowner, according to the the chief of the fleet operational department and the chief of the sea operations headquarters of the FSUE Atomflot, Vladimir Harutyunyan.
Continuing, Mr. Harutyunyan reported that after its withdrawal, the ship continued its route, guided by Rosatomflot nuclear icebreakers.
Sources report that the ship was not damaged, nor oil was spilled, something that if had happened would have caused a major problem for the Arctic waters.
