The Port of Oostende is leading a new project to support this objective of realising a full-scale use of zero-emission fuels in the maritime sector and to tackle the obstacles that currently exist to their use.
The ISHY project is developed together with 15 different partners in the EU, France, the Netherlands and Flanders, including shipowners, shipyards, research institutions, energy producers and ports.
The shipping industry is currently responsible for 3% of all greenhouse gases. Shipping industries and port authorities need to invest in decarbonisation and zero-emission technologies, which include biofuels, fuel cells and batteries, and hydrogen-based fuels
says ESPO.
More specifically, the ISHY project aspires to develop, test and validate technical tools and socio-economic models (business cases) for the implementation of hybrid and hydrogen fuel cell technologies in vessels and ports.
It also aims to develop and the demonstrate the feasibility of these technologies by retrofitting different types of existing vessels, different kind of new built vessels and new bunkering facilities in ports in order to increase the adoption likelihood of this low or zero carbon technology in a sector with high impact potential.
