The London P&I Club has issued the latest edition of loss prevention publication StopLoss 59 which includes the following: Iron ore fines from Sierra Leone As the country recovers from years of civil strife, the resurgence of mining operations has led to an increase in exports and, in particular, in iron ore fines shipments. Brookes Bell discusses the practical challenges of ensuring that these cargoes are IMSBC Code compliant. Coal shipments from Indonesia Members continue to experience issues with coal shipments out of Indonesia self-heating on a regular basis. Minton Treharne & Davies explain the importance of monitoring the pre-shipment temperature of this cargo in order to ensure that loading operations are properly controlled and the inherent risks are managed. Ship Inspection Programme The Club discusses feedback from itsShipInspectionProgramme emphasising the importance of regular maintenance of hoisting wires and the need for a realistic approach towards hold cleanliness issues. Bridge Navigational Watch Alert System From 1 July 2012, the introduction of a Bridge Navigational Watch Alert System will be phased in amongst existing passenger and cargo ships. Fatigue continues to be a problem within the industry and it is to be hoped that this will assist in preventing fatigue-related accidents. Cargo hold pipework Maintenance of cargo hold pipework continues to be an issue giving rise tocargoclaims and Members are reminded of the need to inspect pipework on a regular basis.
