Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (“K” Line) has invested in a wind power kite system expected to reduce carbon emissions by around 20%.
In particular, K Line has established OCEANICWING S.A.S. in France. This company has acquired the business of AIRSEAS (France) as of February 15th. According to K Line, the primary goal is to enhance the development and commercialization of “Seawing” wind power kite system.
The kite system is expected to reduce CO2 emissions from vessels by approximately 20%. Seawing can be installed on any type of vessel.
Furthermore, the system can be used without the need for additional energy production or supply facilities. K Line also mentions that the integration of Seawing with fuel conversion methods is expected to further improve CO2 reduction performance.
To remind, K Line installed the first Seawing on a Capesize carrier at the end of 2022. Afterwards, K Line announced plans to purchase kite systems to be installed on post-Panamax bulk carriers.
Furthermore, in March 2023, K Line and J-Power installed the Seawing on the coal carrier Corona Citrus.
