The containership Ital Libera is now heading back to Italy, in order to to repatriate the body of its deceased captain.
As Hapag-Lloyd informed, force majeure has been declared with the ship diverting from Asia to Italy.
Ital Libera is now sailing back to Italy, after the captain lost his life from COVID-19, while the vessel was denied entry into Asia.
According to an update from May, the crew members tested positive for COVID-19 upon a recent departure from Durban, and was eventually diverted to the Port of Jakarta.
The force majeure has been declared in order to repatriate the body of the Captain to Italy after the ship was denied access to Asian ports.
While details of the captain’s death are not clear, Italian media report that the captain has been dead for about two months.
