At SMM Hamburg 2024, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering EP Division (HD KSOE EcoPhin) and Amogy have announced a strategic partnership to enhance ammonia-powered propulsion solutions.
The collaboration will integrate HD KSOE EcoPhin’s eco-friendly propulsion systems with Amogy’s ammonia-to-electrical power technology to offer a comprehensive, turn-key solution for electrifying vessels, promoting sustainability in shipping.
Amogy’s technology “cracks” liquid ammonia into hydrogen and nitrogen, using the hydrogen in a fuel cell to generate carbon-free power. This clean energy solution is particularly valuable for sectors like maritime shipping that are hard to decarbonize.
Both companies see the partnership as a step toward optimizing performance and exploring further commercial opportunities, aligning with their shared goal of advancing eco-friendly maritime energy systems.
To remind, a study by Sphera, commissioned by The Society for Gas as a Marine Fuel (SGMF), found that advancements in ammonia production and engine technologies could further enhance its environmental advantages. Initiatives like dedicated production plants and engine improvements hold promise for maximizing the benefits of ammonia as a marine fuel.
