Video produced by the European Community Shipowners’ Associations (ECSA) explains the Maritime Labour Convention’s role. In particular, the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) of ILO ensures comprehensive worldwide protection of the rights of seafarers and fair competition for Member States and shipowners.
The MLC covers working and living conditions onboard constantly inspected by Port State Authorities. Specifically, the eight restrictions covered by the MLC are: medical certification; employement agreements; working and rest hours; accomodation; on board recreational facilities; food; complaining procedures and payment of wages.
According to the data given, 1.6 million seafarers are protected by the MLC worldwide.
