HMM has welcomed its LNG-ready, 13,000 TEU container ship, HMM Garnet, at the HD Hyundai Heavy Industries headquarters in Ulsan.
This vessel is the first among the twelve 13,000 TEU containerships resulting from a contract signed in June 2021 with shipbuilders Hanwha Ocean and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. HMM aims to bolster its environmental commitment by incorporating twelve newly-launched 13,000 TEU containerships into its fleet.
The vessels are designed to be LNG-ready, featuring energy-saving technologies to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce pollutant emissions. Notably, the ships feature a smart ship solution, enabling real-time transmission of operational data to HMM’s Fleet Control Center for comprehensive visibility.
To remind, HMM had also placed an $1.2 billion order with Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries(HSHI) and HJ Shipbuilding and Construction(HJSC) for nine 9,000 TEU containerships powered by methanol dual-fuel engines.
Kim Kyung Bae, President and CEO of HMM, emphasized the significance of these new ships, anticipating their contribution to environmental credentials, increased capacity, and flexibility amid global market competition.
Upon completion of the twelve 13,000 TEU ship deliveries this year, HMM’s total fleet capacity is projected to reach 1 million TEUs. In a symbolic touch, the vessels are named after birthstones from January to December, reflecting the company’s commitment to treating customers’ cargo as valuable as jewelry.
