‘Star Gran’, a cargo vessel that belongs to Grieg Star, is the first vessel in the company to be sent for recycling, under the new EU recycling regulations. According to the Norwegian shipping company, the vessel began the recycling at Leyal Ship Recycling Group in Turkey, on February 20.
Specifically, CEO Camilla Grieg commented that Star Gran vessel has been operating for 33 years, thus, time has come for the vessel to end its voyage.

Mainly, from 31/12/2018, EU flagged ships have to be dismantled in facilities included in the EU list of approved ship recycling facilities. During December, the European Commission added six new yards, among which we find the first non-EU yards, with 2 from Turkey and 1 from the US.
ECSA welcomed this decision, but it added that the EU must include more non-EU ship recycling facilities.
Finally, as stated by the European Commission, European ship owners have the 35% of the global fleet.
The majority of the fleet is being dismantled in South Asia, resulting to harmful effects to workers’ health and environment.
