On 8 April, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) assisted in extinguishing a fire that broke out aboard a RoRo vessel during loading operations at the port of Abra de Ilog, south of Manila.
The vessel was in the process of loading passengers and cargo for a routine trip to Batangas, Luzon, when a generator caught fire on the deck near the fantail inside a vehicle bay. At the time, there were 33 passengers, 34 crew members, and 21 trucks onboard.
After receiving a report of the fire, the PCG unit stationed at Abra de Ilog responded to the incident. In the meantime, the vessel’s crew initiated firefighting efforts.
As reported, Coast Guard personnel coordinated with the local Philippine Ports Authority office to secure additional firefighting gear and the fire was brought under control and fully extinguished. Furthermore, no injuries or fatalities were reported.
The Coast Guard has advised that the vessel be detained for a comprehensive safety inspection.
